Island County, which comprises of Camano Island and Whidbey Island in Washington State, is located just north of Seattle. With very few mappers working in on the island the roads are in need updating from the original TIGER import. The goal of this task is to:
- Align roads to the latest imagery
- Add new roads
- Correct any naming errors
- Remove TIGER tags no longer needed

Washington County Roads
County roads in Washington State are available as a background layer in JOSM. The WMS service can be loaded in JOSM using the images preferences with the following url in box 1
- Press Get Layers, select Washington Roads
- Change the image type to png
- Name the layer Washington County Roads
Many of the roads are left over from the original TIGER import. Align the roads with the imagery and/or county road background. The Improve Way Accuracy tool is an easy way to align ways. Add the Extend Way Accuracy* plug in. Follow these instructions to get it working correctly.
Add Missing Roads
There are a number of missing roads that need to be added. If the road is in a rural area, use highway=unclassified otherwise, highway=residential. Some are un-named. Those with names, the name is abbreviated.
Expand Road Name Abbreviations
Island County only supplies an abbreviated street name, for example, S Camano Ridge Rd. Abbreviated names should be expanded. For the previous example that would be South Camano Ridge Road.
Non Existing Roads
If you notice road that are in OSM, but do not appear either the satellite or county road background layer they should be removed. If the road exists on the imagery but not on the county road layer, it should be tagged as highway=service.
Please remove TIGER tags. As far as I can tell they serve no useful purpose. There is a nice script that uses a JOSM scripting plug in to speed up the process. Read bdiscoe's diary post for a how to.
